Today at Coniston Hall we had a vibrant lecture my Mrs Jane Davies, CEO of the Manchester Science Parks. Mrs Davies presented positive prospects on the future of business in Manchester and also gave important advice with regards to choosing the right career after university. This lecture brought to a close the series on “The Future of Manchester” and we would like to thank all of our speakers for their time, inspiration and for encouraging us to build a better future

National Science and Engineering Week comes to Coniston Hall

As part of the National Science and Engineering Week, Dr Francisca Wheeler (MBE) gave a lecture at Coniston entitled “The Physics in Music”. Participants learned about the world of physics through practical and entertaining musical demonstrations.

Today the Vice Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University, Professor John Brooks, came to give the final lecture for the series entitled “The Future of Manchester”. Professor Brooks’ lecture was entitled “The Future of the University”. Today, Mr Peter Mount, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Central Manchester University Hospitals gave a lecture in Coniston Hall entitled “The future of the NHS”. This lecture addressed the current challenges facing the NHS within the current economic climate. This was the first of a series entitled “The future of the University”. In February, we have two more fantastic speakers lined up. Professor Peter Brooks, Vice Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University will talk to us about “The Future of the University” and Mrs. Jane Davies OBE , Chief Executive of Manchester Science Park will give a lecture entitled “The Future of Business in Manchester”. Everyone is welcome!

This year, Coniston Hall is having a series of lecturers from different fields within the academic world. This Thursday, Dr Conor Cunningham, who is a lecturer in the Centre of Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham, gave us a brilliant lecture at Coniston Hall. His lecture was based on his program entitled “Did Darwin Kill God?” which was part of a BBC2 series celebrating 150 years of Darwin’s semenal work “The Origin of the Species”. The lecture room was packed with many residents and students coming from several departments of the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. The lecture was extremely engaging with many questions and answers looking at the compatibility between faith, reason and science.

Coniston Resident obtains top marks for PhD

Congratulations to Marialuisa Gentile who completed her PhD thesis in Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester. Marialuisa had her viva on 1st September and obtained top marks for PhD with no corrections! She has now returned to Italy where she has gotten a job as a chemical engineer. Congratulations Marialuisa and all the best for the future!

Coniston Resident wins Volunteer of the Year Award 2010

Congratulations to Tara Lee who has been nominated 2010 Volunteer of the Year and won a prize a this year’s awards ceremony. Tara studies History of Art at the University of Manchester and also volunteers at the home work club run by students in Coniston. Tara is now in her final year of university and will continue her volunteering activities while she lives in Coniston. Well done Tara!
